Each time I introduce myself as a writer, the responses are often similar, “…Is it that lucrative?”
Unless you are Chinua Achebe or Chimamanda Adichie, our society has little economic regard for writers. I’ve met a number of aspiring writers who are worried about the possibility of turning their writing skill into money.
The good news is that, the internet offers online writers the opportunity to use their God-given talent and take control of their destinies.
You have heard about Content marketing, right? For the record;
Content Marketing means creating and sharing valuable free content to attract and convert prospects into customers/clients, and into repeat buyers. The type of content you share is closely related to what you sell; in other words, you’re educating people so that they know, like, and trust you enough to do business with you.
This concept of online marketing has empowered writers to run the show.
I’ve been an online writer since 2009 and I don’t intend untagging the ‘writer’ label. It’s been an enlightening journey so far; of course not without the struggles and tough times. I’ve been privileged to be associated with Brands like Google Nigeria as a content publisher – and we haven’t started yet.
2014 will mark a shift in both the perception and the affluence of online writers. Here are three main reasons.
Content fuels Online Marketing
The entire web is run by content – not just content but valuable information that attracts attention, drives traffic and builds business. In other words, writers and other content creators run the internet.
Interestingly, people are starting to realize that content is the foundation of effective online marketing; whether you are on the mission to build a relationship with prospects, to create direct ad on Facebook or Adwords, share on social media or create SEO strategy.
The increase in demand of content creators means more business, compensation and regard for the online writer. 2014 promises even greater fortune for writers as content marketing has come to stay.
Google promotes the online writer
Google continues to make changes to its search engine algorithm that offers greater exposure for online writers and content creators. The Penguin, Panda and Hummingbird updates have made online writers the center of the equation.
Google+ authorship (a feature that allows you to Link your Google+ profile to the content you create) now offers the search engine enough data to know who you are and what influence you possess. If you can demonstrate strong presence on Google+, you will build authority and command better compensation as an online writer.
See what Google+ authorship does to search results. With this feature, Google knows the original online writer of content, and it creates a sense of personality to your online property in search research. This is really amazing for building relationships and authority.

The writer as the media entrepreneur
Online writing has become serious business, and even more so in 2014. The rest of the business world is starting to realize how important content marketing is to their business and how writers run the show.
This is good news because you can now concentrate on your art as a writer, and become a real entrepreneur.
You can decide to build your own online media platform and turn it into a business; you can offer writing and/or consulting service; you can decide to self-publish your own ebooks and other digital products. YOU decide what you make of your writing career; exciting, isn’t it?
Never underestimate how much you are worth as a writer. You’ve got a valuable skill that can make your dream come true.
